Site Relaunch

by Ed

Website
Been trying to get all of my blogs straightened out. I now have the following:

I’m in the process of moving posts/comments around, and setting things up the way I want to get them, and Brandy and I have been talking about her posting to the site as well, which she seems interested in. Amelia and Daphne might even start posting about the various adventures of their animals…

Weight Loss

by Ed

Weight today — 303 lbs.  This is just short of my first goal, which is 40 lbs lost.  I’ve stagnated.  I’m not at a plateau, as I’m not actively trying to lose more weight.  I’ve been hovering around this for several weeks now.  I stopped Nutrisystem, just because I can’t stand it any more.   It was great at first, but for some reason, I can’t stomach it any more.  In fact, lots of foods aren’t appealing to me any more for some reason.  A sandwich, for example.  I don’t know why, but eating a sandwich (at home) is difficult.  I’m developing a weird attitude vs. a lot of foods, and I’m not sure why.  Hopefully it’s just a stage.

Week #6

by Ed

This week begins the 6th week of my diet, and I’m proud to say that I’m now 27 pounds lighter than when I started!  I’m now at 313 lbs.  This is the smallest I’ve been in years!   Today I went through my pants and separated them into 5 categories.  Too big (started a pile of those to donate), What fits me now, What will fit me in a week or so, and then the future.  I want to remove anything that’s too big as soon as it doesn’t fit me.  This is a one-trip — I don’t ever plan on getting to the size I was again.  When I get down to my target weight, I’m going to spring for a new wardrobe.  Until then, I’ll grab some stuff from goodwill, since I’m not going to be wearing it very long.

One thing I’ve been trying to do while I’m on this journey is to be more active.  It’s pretty hard with what I do for a living, so I do what I can, when I can.  Yesterday I went skiing.  Tomorrow, I’ll get back on the Wii Fit.  Every little bit helps!

Week 4

by Ed

scaleStarting my 4th week of the new diet.  Things are going pretty well.  Hit a plateau this week which was a bummer, but it made it up by the end of the week.  Went out to dinner on Saturday (Ruby Tuesday’s), didn’t go nutso, and also didn’t fall off the wagon!   We’ve decided to go out once a month, and try to be as good as we can.  It can be difficult, especially if you go to a place that has tons of good (and fattening) food!   I’m off of work this week, because we’re going to Steamboat tomorrow.  We’re taking our NS food, so we should be good to go.  I don’t think I’ll have any problems dropping more weight this week, since I plan on expending a *lot* of energy!  So without any further delay…

Ed steps on the scale…

319.6

This brings my weight loss to a total of 20.4 lbs!  Not bad for 3 weeks.  I looked around for a javascript thing that would show the weight on a scale, but couldn’t find one.  Perhaps I should add that to the projects list….  Also, something to show a progress graph would be nice.

Week 2 Done!

by Ed

Stepped on the scale this morning…

322.8, which brings me up to 17.2 lbs. lost in two weeks!   Hopefully things will keep going this fast!   I’ve also been doing the Wii Fit just about every day, so I’m sure that’s helping as well.

My arm (cont.)

by Ed

So, on my birthday, I went skiing and hurt my arm.  Today, I finally went to the doc, and he said that it was a torn rotator cuff.  I had talked with a friend before, and he offered that as a possibility.  It’s hurting less these days, but I might have to take my friend Gloria’s advise and go get a massage.  The great thing is, I can go on our ski trip to Steamboat later this month!  I’m very excited, since I should be able to get a lot better there.  (Providing my shoulder doesn’t give me too much trouble.)

1 week down, 51 to go

by Ed

scaleSo, I started my new diet last week, and now it’s time to step on the scale….  drum roll please…..

330.2!

That means I’ve lost 9.8 lbs!  Not bad for one week!  I know that some of that is water weight, and it will slow down, but still!   This week I have been very energetic, even though I removed caffeine from my diet.   There might be something to this whole eating right thing after all!

Wii (un)Fit

by Ed

Wii FitSo, one of my gifts for Christmas from my wife was a Wii Fit.  The problem is, there’s a weight limit of 330 lbs.  Unfortunately this is slightly lower than I was at Christmas.  I haven’t posted any weight loss numbers yet, but I think I’ll be able to play with it this weekend. :)   It sucks that they put a relatively low weight limit on a product that encourages weight loss.   I’m decently active, and would have no problems doing the exercises on it, including push-ups, etc.  I’m just a big dude.  I hope to eventually be a big dude that weighs 120 lbs lighter, but that’s a whole other deal.

Comcastic?

by Ed

ComcastSo, our DirecTiVo has been giving us some major problems lately — freezing multiple times a day, requiring a reboot, extreme artifacts (to the point of not being able to watch some programs), and we’ve decided to switch to Comcast for our cable (and phone as well, since it’s cheaper).  We’ve been wanting to do this for a while, but figured we’d wait until after the holidays, since we’ll be buying a new Series 3 Tivo to replace this one.  Some might ask why we’re going through all of this effort — why not just replace the Tivo we have?  Well, there are several reasons:

  1. We want to go HD eventually (hopefully this year)
  2. We have more loyalty to TiVo then to DirecTV
  3. The HD DVR from DirecTV sucks
  4. The HD DVR from Comcast sucks
  5. We want the features that the S3 TiVo will give us, like sharing between rooms, streaming videos from my PC, etc.

I looked into what it will cost us, and it turns out to be cheaper than what we’re paying now (even after the promo rate expires in a year)  Hopefully soon, our MythTV box will be repurposed.

One Calendar to Rule Them All

by Ed

iPhoneSo, I bought an iPhone last year, and one of the things that bugged me was the fact that I couldn’t readily sync up my 4 Google calendars from my family members (if you don’t do this, you should — it’s an awesome way to keep track of everyone’s schedule).  I have now found a way to do this, with a little work.  The payoff is awesome though!   Till now, I’ve been using Gmails SMS feature to alarm me with GCalendar alerts, but it’s not very elegant, and potentially costs money in SMS charges.  The Google calendar sync wouldn’t work, because it only syncs your main calendar.  I tried out Nueva, but that didn’t work either because I use Outlook for work, and you can only have one outlook account on the iPhone.  After doing some searching, I found Calgoo, which offers free calendar syncing.  All you have to do is create multiple outlook calendars, and use the Calgoo app to sync them!  I was very impressed when I looked at my Calendar on the iPhone, and it just worked!  Multiple calendars, with color coding!  I’m so jazzed right now!
